The Pomodoro Technique Explained

The Pomodoro Technique was developed by Francesco Cirillo in the late 1980s. It's a time management method that uses focused 25-minute work sessions separated by short breaks โ€” named after the tomato-shaped kitchen timer Cirillo used as a student.

How to Use This Timer

Click Start to begin a 25-minute focus session. When the timer ends, you'll hear a beep and the timer will prompt you to take a 5-minute break. After 4 focus sessions (pomodoros), you earn a 15-minute long break. Each completed session is tracked so you can see your total focus time.

Why It Works

Breaking work into short, focused chunks reduces mental fatigue and prevents burnout. The regular breaks maintain concentration over longer periods. The technique also combats perfectionism โ€” you commit to working for just 25 minutes, making it easier to start difficult tasks.

Customizing Your Timer

The classic 25/5 split works for many people, but you may find 50/10 or 45/15 works better for your flow. Use the settings panel to tune durations to your needs.
