Meta tags are snippets of HTML that live in the <head> of a page and provide structured information about that page to search engines and social networks. They're invisible to visitors but critical for SEO and how your content looks when shared.
Open Graph tags were created by Facebook and are now used by most social platforms โ LinkedIn, Slack, WhatsApp, and others โ to render rich link previews. The key tags are og:title, og:description, og:image and og:url.
Twitter has its own set of meta tags (twitter:card, twitter:title, etc.) that control how links appear in X/Twitter feeds. If Twitter doesn't find its own tags, it falls back to Open Graph values.
Google typically displays up to 60 characters for the title and 160 characters for the description in search results. Going over these limits doesn't cause penalties but the text will be truncated, potentially cutting off important information.
