In the binary (base-1024) system used by operating systems, 1 KB = 1024 bytes, 1 MB = 1024² bytes, and so on. In the decimal (base-1000) system used by storage manufacturers and network equipment, 1 KB = 1000 bytes. This is why a "500 GB" hard drive appears as ~465 GB in Windows — the OS uses binary, the manufacturer uses decimal.
