What is an aspect ratio?

An aspect ratio describes the proportional relationship between width and height. It's expressed as two numbers separated by a colon, e.g. 16:9. A 1920×1080 display and a 1280×720 display both have a 16:9 aspect ratio.

Common aspect ratios

16:9 — Standard widescreen, used by HD/4K monitors and YouTube. 4:3 — Classic TV and older monitors. 1:1 — Square format, popular on Instagram. 9:16 — Vertical/portrait, used for Stories and TikTok. 21:9 — Ultra-wide cinema format. 3:2 — Most DSLR camera sensors.
